A Family Trial

bbc NI transparent .png

On Christmas day 2008 an elderly woman was found dead in her Newry home.

The deeply religious mother of eight met an extremely brutal and violent end. Within days a woman living next door was charged with murder, but over two years later the trial is yet to begin. For the victim’s family, however, the real trial started the day they lost their mother.

This unique BBC Northern Ireland film has gained exclusive access to the family of murdered Newry pensioner Maire Rankin as they endure the harrowing experience of sitting through the trial. This is the emotional inside story of an ordinary family going through an extraordinary ordeal.
